The Golf Course: A Masterpiece by John Sanford and Team
The golf course, designed by John Sanford and his team, is a standout along the Red Sea coastline, celebrated not only for its breathtaking aesthetics but also for its sustainable approach to golf course design.
Set in a pristine desert environment, the project presented significant challenges, including water scarcity and the strong seasonal winds typical of the region. To overcome these hurdles, Sanford and his team embraced a forward-thinking, sustainable design strategy.
The team selected Paspalum grass—a drought-resistant variety that thrives in saline conditions—specifically Sea Dwarf for the greens and Seashore for the fairways. This choice ensures year-round playability while significantly reducing water consumption, making it an ideal solution for the harsh desert environment.
In addition to the Paspalum grass, the landscape is dotted with 1,200 date palms and 200 Washingtonian palms. These not only enhance the visual appeal of the course but also contribute to its sustainability, adding natural shade and resilience to the design.
A hallmark of the course’s design is its topography, which Sanford and his team expertly sculpted to create a variety of unique and challenging holes. Notably, holes 11 and 16 stand out for their steep undulations, offering both aesthetic beauty and exciting challenges for golfers.
